Some schools require students to take a certain number of courses that are specific to one branch of psychology or another regardless of whether the students' interest lies in that field or has overlap in that field.

To what degree do you agree with this practice? Do you see a value in cognitive or neuro-psych course beyond the introductory level for dedicated IO students?

I have a dataset of student outcomes from a longitudinal data collection. Some of the students went into what we are calling "remediation" and some did not. I have been tasked with identifying some of the points of differentiation between the sets of students but am at a loss for where to begin.

I have been an assistant professor for a few years now and have recently been offered an applied position that is a perfect fit with my interests with a substantial pay increase. However, having never worked a corporate-type job, I have no idea if I would like it. I am nervous to leave academia only to discover working for "the man" is not my thing. So, I would like to hear thoughts from others that have switched career paths. Was it a good move? How do academic and applied jobs compare?

I have a data set with three groups of respondents (Managers, Senior Supervisors, and Junior Supervisors). I need to calculate an un-weighted average for a scale score. I need an un-weighted average because my sample of junior and senior supervisors is much larger then my sample of managers. I am using SPSS. Is there a macro I can use or something like that? I have 120 variables so I really don’t want to do this by hand.

Related to this blog post, there is an active tug of war going on in classrooms between the utility of learning information in and of itself and learning what to do with it. We have insufficient time to cover the breadth of subjects already. Where do you strike the balance between teaching content and encouraging information literacy and critical thinking?

http://opieweb.com/questions/122/how-to-develop-a-writing-sample-testHow to develop a writing sample test?Jamie Madigan2009-12-08T22:05:52Z2009-12-09T16:54:20Z

I have a client who is requesting a pre-employment test for measuring candidates' writing skills. I'm in the process of outlining various options, ranging from multiple choice tests measuring knowledge of spelling, grammar, sentence construction, etc. to soliciting proctored or unproctored writing samples.

I have a feeling that where we're going to end up is asking candidates to produce a writing sample that the hiring team can evaluate. Does anyone here have experience developing this kind of assessment or know of any good resources you can point me to? Standardization in administration and scoring is obviously key, and I'm trying to get my head around what the evaluation standards for the samples might be and how to set things up so that the hiring teams/SMEs evaluate the samples appropriately, accurately, and fairly.

Any thoughts?

http://opieweb.com/questions/70/how-do-we-get-academics-to-use-opieweb-instead-of-listservsHow do we get academics to use OPIEWeb instead of listservs?Jen Bunk - Admin2009-10-28T12:58:58Z2009-11-24T16:58:49Z

Our main competitor, if you can call it that, among academics are email listservs. We are not trying to put listservs completely out of business because they do have their purpose and at times may be more appropriate than OPIEWeb. For example, listservs are well-suited for general announcements and requests for collaboration.

However, OPIEWeb is much better suited for Q & A. The problem is getting people to come here and start using it. A lot of folks are very loyal to their listservs and are hesitant to try something new. The other advantage that listservs have is that b/c they are email-based, it's very easy to ask and answer a question - you can do it right from your email inbox, a place where academics frequent.

The challenge then, it to get academics to start frequenting OPIEWeb.

Ideas???

http://opieweb.com/questions/90/anthropomorphizing-groups-societies-organizations-reposted-from-several-academAnthropomorphizing Groups, Societies, Organizations, reposted from several Academy of Management listserversRomie Frederick Littrell2009-11-07T04:54:37Z2009-11-16T17:59:24Z

I’m critiquing a research paper by a post-graduate student who has
referenced a quotation from an article by Gray, Owen & Adams (1996)
in which they anthropomorphise “society”, explaining society as “a
series of social contracts between members of society and society
itself”. Society is a network of various kinds of linkages where
people gather to do things. Society is not a conscious entity that
does things of its own volition. Moreover, the things done there are
transactions that occur in large numbers, at the volition of many
people and institutions, motivated by a diverse array of reasons for
engaging in them. People tell me what groups, societies,
organisations did today, why it did that, what it is afraid of, what
it is struggling to do, or what external influences are preventing it
from accomplishing its intent. None of these statements is true. To
re-emphasise, an organisation, group, society, or market is a place
where people gather to do things, not a conscious entity that does
things of its own volition that can be analysed as if it were a human
being.

Any agreement, disagreement, other ideas?

I am a practicing organizational psychologist with a positive bent. I've worked a lot with big companies and can find my way around HR systems, link them to strategy etc.

I now live in a small English town and I am working more in social media (like this site) - partly because social media is affecting organizational structure so much and partly because I can run an pnline organizational practice 2 hours travelling time out of London (UK).

I also help small businesses with their IT. We can add a lot of value by looking at all IT from a socio-technical point of view.

The name of my company is Rooi. That means red - roll the r and say Royyy. The English spontaneously say Roux-ee The .com was already taken but I liked Rooi for its googley look. I've pretty much settled on rooipursuits.com as my url and I am thinking of using a (happy) tortoise as my logo. I am thinking of some lines like a running track to convey a race.

If you can imagine a "laughing tortoise" next to the words rooi pursuits. Does that convey to you a positive, contemporary, organizational psychology? And most importantly, do you know any taboos that would make a tortoise unacceptable? I know the tortoise mustn't be green and I've already been told by a graphic artist that red is an unstable colour in print. Bad choice - I just liked the look of the word!

Free for all now : what do you think? What are the best images for organizational psychology now that machine-metaphors are definitely out.

Thanks.

My dissertation was somewhat exploratory in nature. It was based on published calls for further research on the topic. I had to choose a side of an unresolved debate and, in the end, the hypotheses I developed were not supported. This is ok with me because the fact that my hypotheses were not supported adds clarity and support for one side of the unresolved issue in the literature. Is it realistic to submit an article based on this research for publication?

Apologies if this seems like a naive question to those of you who work within the experimental paradigm.

As part of a wider programme of research looking at the role of emotion in relation to decision-making in financial institutions, we have the opportunity to carry out a field experiment with a group of traders. A key hypothesis relates to differences between expert and novice traders in emotion regulation and the unfolding of emotion arousal over a performance episode. While we have good access with the opportunity to collect both biometric and questionnaire data over multiple performance episodes in different market conditions, the sample of traders is likely to be small (possibly 5 to 10 in the low experience group and 5 - 10 in the high experience group).

My questions concern a) the extent to which it is possible to compensate for the small sample of individuals by collecting a larger sample of performance episodes and b) what would be a suitable approach to deciding whether the sample is too small to generate meaningful results?

StackOverflow, which provided the software for this site, is a techie site. They ask questions when they are stuck and they share specific answers.

I've been pondering how to ask good questions here. It seems to me that
a) we rarely offer the context in which we are working and it is the context that guides us to the relevant principles to use.
b) often we are discussing goals or values where techies are discussing plans and solutions.

Any comments while I ponder how to ask questions that can be answered rather than discussed.
