As discussed in this blog post, what can we take away from the business world when it comes to evaluating student performance?

I regard evaluations as a ritual akin to 'adjourning' behavior in group formation. The point of an assignment to provide the occasion for challenging, engaging request that allows a student to apply and integrate material in social context that is similar to the way they will use the information elsewhere. The assignment moves people from one status to another - not having done to having done! And the final examination is a type of full stop (period). It says enough. You've spent enough time on this. Move on to new challenges! Academics have a touching faith in the business world. We should know by know that there are few well run firms in the world and they don't all worry about evaluation. They work out what is needed for their common adventure - and to that! |
