Question time: serious question time.

IO psychology has been around for 100 years or so. What can we offer to businesses and other enterprises with any confidence?

Can we name 10 interventions where we can "guarantee" a positive result? I'll answer my own question to get started.

I might nominate the Pygmalion Effect as fitting the bill for being both well-documented ('offered with confidence') and having powerful effects (a 'guaranteed result').

For the evidence, you might review Dov Eden's field studies with the Israeli Defence Forces in his 1990 Journal of Applied Psychology and 1992 Leadership Quarterly articles. There is also a meta-analytic review of the topic in McNatt's 2000 J Appl Psych article.

Collective efficacy: if the collective efficacy of the firm rises by 1-2 SD, then output will rise 5-10%.

Evidence: Extrapolated from school psychology

Cost: No capital investment

Direct research evidence: None that I know in business. Most work has been done in education and youth psychology.

Intervention: In small groups, team building. In large businesses, appreciative inquiry.

Monitoring: Language and Behavior showing inclusion and trust beginning at the top.

Time: 6 months
