I have a client who is requesting a pre-employment test for measuring candidates' writing skills. I'm in the process of outlining various options, ranging from multiple choice tests measuring knowledge of spelling, grammar, sentence construction, etc. to soliciting proctored or unproctored writing samples.

I have a feeling that where we're going to end up is asking candidates to produce a writing sample that the hiring team can evaluate. Does anyone here have experience developing this kind of assessment or know of any good resources you can point me to? Standardization in administration and scoring is obviously key, and I'm trying to get my head around what the evaluation standards for the samples might be and how to set things up so that the hiring teams/SMEs evaluate the samples appropriately, accurately, and fairly.

Any thoughts?

Not to plug the company I work for, but I believe we have tests similar to what you might be looking for.

Edit

I can't say specifically which product would work for you. I don't know all the ins and outs of the products we sell, but we do have an assessment engine which we use to handle all of our tests, and I know that there is at least one which has some writing involved. I can't actually say the exact capabilities of our engines as I don't work in that area. What our products solve is online testing and scoring. We essentially try and remove the paper out of the paper test equation. Sorry, for the plug. Really what I am getting at is that if you don't want to create it yourself, we can probably help and we have IO psychologists who deal strictly in creating and handling assessments. My guess is that the answer to your questions are going to be much more in depth than what OpieWeb is designed for, and so you may just want to call and drop an email. We've gone through what you are asking before, so they can offer advice as to how to proceed.

Give me about 10-15 minutes to find out who to talk to and what information they have.

Edit

So I checked who you should talk to. He knows a lot more about which product we offer will best suit your needs and which IO psychologist to consult with if need be.
