I have been an assistant professor for a few years now and have recently been offered an applied position that is a perfect fit with my interests with a substantial pay increase. However, having never worked a corporate-type job, I have no idea if I would like it. I am nervous to leave academia only to discover working for "the man" is not my thing. So, I would like to hear thoughts from others that have switched career paths. Was it a good move? How do academic and applied jobs compare?

I have been both. You need to remember that it is very hard to go back to academia - it has quite a rigid structure. Possibly hedge your bets with a sabbatical or unpaid leave of absence.

Careers in business are a lot more amorphous. First tell us, is this for a business or a consulting firm, or a publisher.

More detail is important to read the market.
